George E Cooper
- Lieutenant Colonel USA Pennsylvania - 4/13/1881 E 425 79 Cooper was a surgeon with the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Medical Department. According to notes taken in the National Archives, Cooper served in Angel Island's military hospital. In 1881 there were only ten lieutenant colonel surgeons in the entire US Army. Cooper also has the distinction of being the highest ranking officer with a regular commission to be buried in the Angel Island Post Cemetery. The text from an 1879 letter from Cooper to the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army is displayed with the record for Maj. Samuel Appleton Storrow, E430. In April of 2004 the US Department of Veteran's Affairs Nationwide Gravesite Locator recorded Cooper's date of death 4/3/1881. |
