Hill, Child Dependent - - 7/1/1875 E 421 58 In April of 2004 all that the US Department of Veteran's Affairs Nationwide Gravesite Locator recorded for the child Hill was that he was "Hill, Child, son (minor child) of Hill, Father, COMSY SGT US ARMY." The child Hill's presence in the cemetery is a testimony to the childhood mortality of the times, and the enlisted men who had families with them on military posts, despite the army's attempts to discourage them. As a commisary sergeant, the senior Hill would have been responsible for keeping the men with his unit or post supplied with food. Notes taken in the National Archives indicate that the Hills were posted to Alcatraz. |
