Bryant was a private in Company H of the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment, which was created back in 1792.  During the late 1800's the 3rd saw extensive service in campaigns against the Native Americans in the West.  In the late 1890's the 3rd fought in Cuba and was soon after sent to the Philippines to serve in putting down the Insurrection there.

It does not appear that any part of the 3rd. was ever stationed on Angel Island or Alcatraz.  Private Bryant and the only other member of the 3rd interred on the island,  Private Patrick J Parker, were most likely victims of tropical diseases contracted in the Philippines.  Disease victims in the Philippines were often sent to the Angel Island Post Hospital.
