At one time John Ross served as an acting master in the United States Navy.  A master was a warrant rank held by the individual in charge of navigation and the rigging aboard large sailing ships.  Although his entire career is not know to this author, it is possible that Ross served during the Civil War, as he was accorded a tombstone with a sunken federal shield and raised inscription like those bestowed on Civil War dead.  In 1887 Ross was posted to the fog-bell station at Point Knox on Angel Island after he lost a leg while serving aboard the old Revenue Cutter Shubrick off the coast of Oregon. Ross manned the bell, which was powered by a clockwork that had to be wound every two hours, and a light which was installed in 1900, until his death.  Ross' wife, Mary Ann (E366) was also interred on Angel Island.

In April of 2004 the US Department of Veteran's Affairs Nationwide Gravesite Locator listed Ross as a captain rather than as an acting master, and mis-recorded his post as Wake Island Naval Air Station.  The U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs Database also listed Ross as captain with the initials "CW" beside his lighthouse keeper title, indicating that he served in the Civil War.
