Walter Lickiss
Eickis, Walter Dependent - - 12/26/1881 E 363 80 Walter Lickiss' presence in the Angel Island graves is another reminder of the childhood mortality of the late 1800's. That his father was a sergeant also testifies to the fact that the army was largely unsuccessful in discouraging married men from its ranks. In April of 2004 all that the US Department of Veteran's Affairs Nationwide Gravesite Locator had for him was that he was the "son (minor child) of Lickiss, Walter Sr, SGT US ARMY," clearly the father's name is in error. Notes taken from records in the National Archives spell the surname "Eickiss" and note that he died on Alcatraz. Two relatives of Walter Lickiss, Franklin Brian Lickiss and Karen Butler, have shared that Walter's father was Edwin C. Lickiss who served in U.S. Army from 1854 to 1890. E.C. Lickiss married a woman namend Lena Franklin while stationed on Alcatraz. Their infant son, Walter Franklin Lickiss, died there an infant from lead poisioning contracted by chewing on a toy lead bugle. |
