The military prison on Alcatraz was not only used to punish disobedient soldiers.  The late 1800's are often known as the "Indian Wars" as the US Army endeavored to destroy the traditional way of life of indigenous tribes across the West.  During this time Alcatraz and Angel Island were both used to isolate and incarcerate Native Americans the army viewed as dangerous.

Barncho and another Modoc named Sloluck were given life sentences on Alcatraz after they were found guilty of having been involved in the ambush of Brigadier General E.R.S. Canby in 1873, the only regular army general killed in action during the Indian Wars (George A. Custer was only a Brevet Maj. General, see Charles H. Morgan for more on brevet ranks).

Barncho died of disease while imprisoned on Alcatraz.  Unlike the soldier inmates interred on Angel Island, Barncho was given a cross emblem on his headstone.

A typo in the VA database (as of April 2004) mistakenly identifies Barncho as a "Modoo Indian" and notes that he originally occupied grave 57 on Angel Island and had the alias of "One Eyed Jim."
