Frank Heydenrich's presence in the Angel Island Cemetery is another testament to the child mortality of the 1800's as well as another indication that the 19th century army's attempts to discourage men with families from their ranks was not entirely successful.  Frank's father, as a chief musician, would have been in charge of one of the bands posted to Angel Island.

According to the 1870 Census for Angel Island, Frank's father, Frederick Heydenrich was 43 while his mother, Caroline, was 32.  Both listed "Prussia" as their place of birth.  Four surviving children were also listed: Frederick, 11; Emile, 10; Emma, 8; and William, 1.  The three elder children were born in New York while the youngest was born in California.
