Joe Fereira
- Civilian - - 5/8/1901 E 306 113 Joe Fereira poses a mystery to this writer. In April of 2004 the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs Database lists him as a "civilian indigent citizen" working on Angel Island at the time of his death. The poor fellow still has not had a break, as a tree has decided to displace his headstone. The army would almost always have civilian employees on the post, but why was it so important for the term "indigent" to follow Fereira to the grave? A record from the National Archives apparently describes Fereira as a "Civilian working on milk ranch." While the army was on Angel Island herds of cattle, goats and sheep were kept for the use of the post hospital as well as by enterprising officers and enlisted men looking to supplement their pay. |
