Contract surgeons, also known as "acting assistant surgeons," were expected to serve under full surgeons with the rank of major. Contract surgeons, as the name applies, worked more like independent contractors than regular commissioned officers. A contract surgeon was allowed to keep a private practice as a side-line, although the absence of large civilian populations on Angel Island and Alcatraz may have limited Dr. Koyle's activities in that direction. |
