Henry Hunter
- Military Convict USA - - 1/30/1882 E 299 81 From 1861 - 1933 Alcatraz Island was the army's premier prision in the West for soldiers convicted of military offenses. Henry Hunter would have been one of these. It can be seen that his convict status has quite literally followed him to the grave in that his tombstone is devoid of any religious or military emblem. Army inmates on Alcatraz were designated either as "general prisoners" or "military convicts." General prisoners were sentenced to Alcatraz for a period of time, but after that had been served they would be returned to their units and allowed to serve the rest of their enlistment. Military convicts like Hunter, however, had been dishonorably discharged and were spending the rest of their enlistment periods (or longer, if the offense was serious enough) in confinement. |
